Attention all programmers!
We're pleased to announce that PHP 5.4 has now been rolled out for our shared and reseller hosting clients. This means that in addition to PHP 5.2 and 5.3, you can now tinker away with the latest and greatest release from the rather clever people over at php.net.We're excited to add PHP 5.4 to our hosting offering, as it will allow our clients to develop their sites with the newest features available in PHP. At present, there isn't much in the way of off-the-shelf PHP software that will only run on PHP 5.4, though we do anticipate that this will change over the coming months. For the time being, PHP 5.2 will remain the default installation on our servers, so you don't need to make any changes to your accounts unless you wish to try PHP 5.4. We posted previously about the ability to change the PHP version you use with your hosting account, but remember that you can do this on a per directory basis too! This means that you can try out PHP 5.4 in a test location without affecting your main site or live code with just a few clicks. To do this, simply use the "PHP Version Manager" in your cPanel interface. Choose the directory you wish (or choose public_html for your entire account), and then select the version you wish:
Older PHP Versions
Sadly, all good things must come to an end... Some of the older PHP versions that are currently available (specifically PHP 4.4.9, 5.0.5 and 5.1.6) will be removed over the coming months as they are no longer actively maintained by the PHP team, and are therefore End of Life. A separate announcement will be made regarding this soon, and we will also be working to contact clients who are using these versions to provide them with notice that they will need to bring their code up to date. When we make this change, we will also be switching to use PHP 5.3 as the default installation, though we will be maintaining PHP 5.2 for another 12 months for those clients that experience any compatibility problems to allow them time to resolve them.If you have any questions regarding any of the changes outlined above, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
